Featured Vacation RentalDewees Oceanfront Beach House - Conched Out Lot 38

5 stars for Dewees and even more for Emily and Judy. We are grateful for such a relaxing and grounding week.
The lack of automobiles alone brought me back several shades of sanity. If only there were entire states devoted to pedestrian-only traffic.

Dewees offers a detox from the intoxicating blur and buzz of real life.

Dewees calls to me and I would love to live there for several years. The homes are gorgeous, and the natural surroundings are inspiring. The beaches are first class, yet empty! We loved the alligators and bird life, but most of all the quiet, peaceful days, as life was a century or more ago. I find the Dewees community's commitment to preservation to be fantastic. More specifically, this house is a dream, and the owners and property managers made our trip easy and flawless. Stay at Dewees is you want some quiet time, some beautiful time.... you won't regret it!
My husband and I have stayed on Dewees four times now and loved each of our adventures there. But for our recent stay, we found our accommodations to be especially wonderful. Property 130 was perfect in every single way for our group of 8. Big windows abound and offer incredible views of the tidal lagoon with its rich birding activity. The multiple screened-in porches were a delight--there was always a breeze somewhere. And we found the house spacious yet full of cozy areas as well. The kitchen was well equipped, there were abundant bath and beach towels, and there was also good supply of beach chairs. Three clean, fully functional golf carts allowed our group maximum flexibility as we planned our activities. But if we had to name one favorite feature of the property, we would say it was its location. As we drove to or from the beach, the ferry dock, or anywhere on the island really, the road would take us around the perimeter of the large tidal lagoon with an amazing variety of birds and lots of alligators too. Birdwatching outings became a popular activity for all of us. We can't imagine how how that property could be improved upon!
Recently my family and I visited Charlottes Pearl on Dewees. I had waited all year to take this vacation and it did not disappoint. We arrived later than we expected and were able to find the house even in the dark (thanks to a good map and some really nice people out taking a moonlite stroll). When we arrived the house lights were on and everything was so inviting. The elevator was a luxury that I think every house should have. This was my daughters trip to celebrate her birthday. She and her 6 month old baby and a friend accompanied my husband and I. We awoke early, made mimosas and headed for the beach. During our stay we rode bikes, walked the beach, hunted for seashells, built sand castles, rode in the canoe and drove the golf cart around until the battery nearly died on the way back to the house. We saw alligators, deer, dolphins and crabs. My grandson put his toes in the ocean for the first time and tasted his first sand. The house was amazing. The dual master bedrooms afford us lots of privacy. The kitchen had everything we needed to make and serve meals. The doors that opened up onto the screen porch made me happy. We opened all the doors and let the breeze flow. We cooked on the grill. Had margaritas on the deck and listened as the ocean roared in the back ground. Only one surprising thing in the whole experience and not necessarily a bad one; just an FYI. There is only one tv in the entire house. We only had to do a little negotiating to see whether we were going to watch a movie or play video games. The wifi worked perfectly and there were books and magazines available as well. We met some very lovely people on the island as well, foremost was Judy and her charming husband. They were so kind and helped us navigate around even throwing crabs (the spiders of the sea) out of the canoe so that my daughter would not be scared. Their kindness was extraordinary. I learned a lesson though and decided that next time, I would take the advise of the experts and go to the house drop off all the luggage and go to the store later or have the groceries delivered before I arrived. The most difficult part of the trip was taking tired adults and a baby to the grocery store on our way in. My advise, take enough stuff for breakfast and go get what you need the next day. I give Charlottes Pearl a 10 out of 10. I would recommend the house to people of all ages and abilities.
"Great time. Highly recommend if you are looking for a great relaxing vacation way off the beaten path. The island is absolutely beautiful. "
My wife and I recently spent several nights on Dewees Island, staying in the Foxtail Suite (Huyler House), and had a fantastic time. It was a fun adventure riding a ferry to and from the island; driving a golf cart to get around; witnessing nature (gators!); and relaxing around the pool. I also enjoyed fishing from several of the public docks, and didn't get skunked once :)The owner of Dewees Rentals, Emily, sent us helpful information (e.g., "Survival Guide") before we arrived, and was quick to respond to emails I sent her with various questions. Her staff (college interns) really spoiled us... meeting us at the dock; helping with our luggage; being available to assist us as needed; and even giving us a tour around the island at our request.I can easily recommend this vacation spot as unique, relaxing, and well worth the cost of visiting.
Emily was great at communicating and answered all of our questions. She also came thru for us when we unexpectedly had to add two more people to our reservation last minute. Dewees is a beautiful island and we will be back.
I've been going to Dewees for years and rent from Dewees Rentals multiple times per year. Owner Emily Watson is absolutely the "Best". She always meets our every need no matter the hour.... night or day and she is always accessible by phone. I've rented dozens of times through the years and have found the homes to be immaculately kept at every point. I recommend Dewees Rentals to all my friends......... No place on earth I'd rather go for vacation time with my family!
If you are looking for the definition of R&R, look no further than Dewees Island. We have never vacationed at such a peaceful, private locale. At Moonshine (lot 130), you greet the day with stunning sunrises and drift off at night enveloped with the peace of the island's natural setting. The rental afforded every comfort of home and provided spacious accommodation for everyone. It was the perfect starting off point for any of the day's activities: relaxing on the beach (we were the only ones there!); exploring the island and bald eagle-watching and collecting sea shells; riding bicycles; heading into Charleston for a carriage ride, architectural tour, boutique shopping and gourmet dining; visiting the historic plantations of the South. All these delights are within easy reach of the rental. Needless to say, we will be returning this year and hope to make it an annual tradition!
Emily is amazing to deal with. We have been lucky enough to stay in Charlottes Pearl and another home that is no longer a rental (but was like a treehouse in the sky!) We have 4 kids and being able to travel to dewees in the summer for a week is priceless for us. With 2 teens and 2 toddlers, it's fantastic to unwind and get off our phones. Emily has helped our family out in so many ways, finding us a pack and play and high chair we could use so we didn't have to pack ourselves. She had the interns meet us at the ferry and they helped us with our luggage and gave us a tour of the homes each year! It's like having a bell hop. We had a problem with the dishwasher last year and she was able to get someone to come in within a few days. Understandable as you are on an island with no shops, restaurants or retail. It's serene! We plan on telling our friends about dewees as its great for families to get outdoors, be with each other and bond.
